Conventional approach in “Lowering Gold Purity” involves a series of multiple confusing steps. First, multiplying stock on hand to its present purity, then multiplying the same by its desired karat, then the difference between the two and finally dividing the difference by the target purity.

A jeweler needs to multiply the stock by it purity, then the same by its target purity then the difference between the two, then the difference between pure and target and then another division involving the latter two steps....Whew!! With the availability of an “Electronic Gold Metal Tester”, outputting sensitivity readings in 1/10th of a karat, a jeweler needs a tool for calculating an accurate amount of Gold Alloy or Fine Gold to mix with their stock before stamping purity markings i.e., “14K or 18K”.
